The piece

Why this one exists

A big statement from the phomopsis series, and one of its final chapters. Of that entire Saskatchewan Avenue tree, I have three logs left. When they are carved, the series ends, permanently; there is no more of this wood anywhere, because there is no more of this tree anywhere. Phomopsis figure this dramatic is not a style, it is a biography: fungus, carpenter ants and years of weather, written into pale wood as dark calligraphy. I filmed the tree coming down, and I filmed this piece being carved, so this bowl arrives with its whole life on record, from standing tree to finished form. Scarcity is usually a sales word. Here it is simply the truth.

The tree

It stood here

The Saskatchewan Avenue Russian olive: spotted leafless in late spring, taken down by an arborist at my cost before it could reach the house, traded back to its owners as vases. There is a time-lapse of the felling itself, and it will live on this piece's story page alongside the carving film. The pin marks the avenue; the address stays theirs.

The felling

The day the tree came down

Filmed on Saskatchewan Avenue in July 2024: the tree this piece was carved from, coming down before it could take the house with it. Very few pieces of wood anywhere can show you this moment.
