The piece

Why this one exists

Part of the phomopsis series, where the entire plan is simple: let the scars shine. Celebrate the imperfections. Let the grain speak. Russian olive carries phomopsis figure like a signature, dark calligraphy running through pale wood, and the carpenter ants that helped bring this tree down left handwriting of their own. They ended a tree. They could not end the wood. I love that I get to hand it a second life, carved and finished and celebrated in somebody's home instead of gone to the chipper. Scars are not the opposite of beauty. On this piece, they are the whole point.

The tree

It stood here

From the Saskatchewan Avenue Russian olive: the tree I spotted leafless one late spring, took down with an arborist before it could reach the house, and traded back to the owners as vases. The ants had hollowed its core; the phomopsis series came from its boughs. The pin marks the avenue, not the address.

The felling

The day the tree came down

Filmed on Saskatchewan Avenue in July 2024: the tree this piece was carved from, coming down before it could take the house with it. Very few pieces of wood anywhere can show you this moment.
