Turned from a burl the size of a curled sleeping dog, off the century maple at 600 St Jean Baptiste. Bird's eye figure through the burl, a run of red flame where the tree sealed an old wound, and grey spalting where the fungus got its start. Only four pieces came out of this tree. Carving her felt like finding muscles under the wood: an organic shape I followed rather than chose.
The maple stood at 600 St Jean Baptiste in St. Boniface for about a century. It survived everything except its last winter; the wind took it. Four salvageable pieces came off the trunk before the rest went to the chipper.
