The piece

Why this one exists

The same Saskatchewan Avenue Russian olive as its siblings, and the same method as the other unplanned pieces: I did not arrive at the workbench with a plan. I let the wood tell me what it wanted to become. Apparently, this. Phomopsis figure and ant-written history, shaped by a conversation I mostly just listened to. Some pieces are designed. The best ones are permitted.

The tree

It stood here

The Saskatchewan Avenue Russian olive, one tree that became an entire body of work: spotted dying, taken down before it could hurt anyone, traded back to its owners as vases, and carved piece by piece until only three logs remain. The pin marks the avenue; the address stays theirs.

Where the tree stood
Where the Saskatchewan Avenue olive stood.
The glow marks the neighbourhood. Exact addresses stay private.
The felling

The day the tree came down

Filmed on Saskatchewan Avenue in July 2024: the tree this piece was carved from, coming down before it could take the house with it. Very few pieces of wood anywhere can show you this moment.
