The piece

Why this one exists

Ash cracks terribly as it dries, especially through the heartwood, so my method with it is patience. I carve the form to about two inches thick, let it dry and do its worst, and then carve away the damage. On this bowl, the worst meant the entire bottom. The leather lacing that replaced it is visually striking, but it is not decoration: it is the reason this bowl sits so beautifully on a surface, a soft foot where the cracked wood used to be. It makes a perfect fruit bowl. The live edge, the leather, and the very smooth ash between them give your eye and your fingertips three textures on one form. Same Gimli ash, same shoreline, same sunrise.

The tree

It stood here

The shoreline ash from my brother and sister-in-law's place at Gimli, the fire-pit tree that came down in 2023. Its cracking taught me the two-inch method, and this bowl is that lesson made visible: the flaw removed, the answer laced in leather.
