Why this one exists

Found mid-round. The crew was clearing a section of trees along one of the fairways at the Tuxedo course while I was playing golf, so I did what I always do: found the grounds manager and asked. They gave me two logs, and this is the last piece of that tree. A simple scalloped form with one interesting inclusion; nothing shouting, nothing overworked. Poplar is one of the pale, quiet woods people tend to walk past at a market, and I think they are wrong to. Pale wood is winter light. It belongs in rooms that the louder pieces would bully. If you are the kind of person who hears quiet things, this one has been waiting for you.

A fairway tree at the Tuxedo golf course, taken down in a clearing operation and saved by the simple act of asking the grounds manager. Two logs came home with my clubs. The pin marks the course, not the fairway.
