Sometimes the carver's job is to carve as little as possible and let the wood do the talking. This is one of those occasions. The chatoyancy in this piece is unmatched; tilt it toward the light and the stripes ignite.
This wood was gifted to me by a retired carver who saw an article about my work in the newspaper and decided his best stock belonged on an active bench. I hope I have done enough to honour the gift.
