Manitoba Maple Burl - St. Boniface - 15"

Why this one exists

The same century-maple burl as its sibling in this collection, and the biggest piece I was able to get out of that tree. Most of the wood had sat too long, with rot and ants doing their quiet work, but this section was large and clean enough that I could carve from the outside in instead of chasing whatever the damage left me. Absolutely beautiful wood: red inclusions and a mesmerizing texture that rolls over the whole form. One of the four pieces that tree gave up.

From the century maple at 600 St Jean Baptiste in St. Boniface, brought down by its final winter. Four salvageable pieces came off that tree: the vase, the small bowl, and the two 15-inch burls. This is the largest of the family.
