One of only four pieces I managed to salvage from the burl wood this tree gave up. It had been sitting too long, and most of it was past saving; what survived is all character. The surface pits and rolls like a moon crater, and when I showed it to my kids they said looking into it is like watching the reflections of water on the bottom of a swimming pool. I have not been able to unsee that since. It carries plenty of the red this species is known for, and dark runs of spalting, the fungus signing its name while the wood waited. The shape is completely organic: I carved it exactly as the wood wanted to be carved.
From the century maple at 600 St Jean Baptiste in St. Boniface, the same tree as the burl vase and bowl in this collection. It stood for about a hundred years until its last winter took it. Four salvageable pieces came off that tree. This is one of them.
One of one. When it is gone, it is gone. Ships worldwide, fully insured, from the Winnipeg workshop. Every piece carries its tree’s record: where it stood, its rings, and the carving on film. Leave your details and Sean replies personally, usually the same day.
