The piece

Why this one exists

I love the mid-century modern aesthetic, especially the linear designs with geometric crossing patterns, and I wanted this bowl to carry some of that language. It is another of the recarved pieces: born in my thick-walled years, brought back to the bench, thinned right down, and then given its geometry. Twenty inches of apple, wearing lines from a design era I keep returning to. One more thing, a working note from the bench: apple smells absolutely fantastic while it is being carved. It is my favourite wood, and the smell is half the reason.

The tree

It stood here

Same haul as its 14-inch sibling: several pieces of applewood delivered unannounced by my arborist friend, one random Thursday afternoon, truck and all. The tree grew somewhere in St. Boniface; the exact yard is unknown, so the pin marks the neighbourhood.

The glow marks the neighbourhood. Exact addresses stay private.
