Why this one exists

Another graduate of my thick-walled years. This started life as a flatter, live-edge apple bowl, made back when I did not yet trust myself with thin walls. Lately I have been playing with textured rims and textured outer surfaces, so this one benefited twice from the return to the bench: recarved to thin it right down, then given its textural detail. The old bowl is still in there somewhere; it just grew up. One more thing, a working note from the bench: apple smells absolutely fantastic while it is being carved. It is my favourite wood, and the smell is half the reason.

The tree

It stood here

The apple came to me the best way wood can. My arborist friend pulled up in his truck one random Thursday afternoon with several pieces of applewood, no warning, no occasion, just a friend who knows a carver when a good tree comes down. Best information says it grew somewhere in St. Boniface; exactly where, even he could not say, so the pin marks the neighbourhood rather than a yard.

The glow marks the neighbourhood. Exact addresses stay private.
