The piece

Why this one exists

Part of the twist series. I love the way fire moves, how flames twist as they rise, and that is the shape this vase chases. There is a quiet poetry in it: this wood was destined for a fire, and I saved it from that fate to carve it into flames it will never feel. The form gives you a different silhouette from every angle you approach it; walk around it and it keeps changing its mind. The kintsugi-inspired brass inlay is here because, to my eye, brass works best with applewood of anything I carve: the warmth of the timber and the shine of the metal belong together. It holds dried flowers beautifully. And collectors keep teaching me things: more than one has tucked a bag of soil into the cavity and grown living flowers straight out of it.

The tree

It stood here

When I asked my neighbourhood Facebook group whether anyone had apple coming down, two people answered. The scarred tree in south St. Vital was one. This was the other: an apple in River Park South whose wood was headed for the fire. The pin marks the neighbourhood; the address stays theirs.

The glow marks the neighbourhood. Exact addresses stay private.
