After two years, the St Boniface maple is done. I was driving past the St Boniface golf course when I spotted a felled tree down a side street, so I knocked on the door and asked if I could have some of the wood. A very kind lady said yes.
I came home with eight pieces: seven big ones that became 14 bowls, and one thinner limb that sat in my garage for a year before it decided it wanted to be something. It became two little vases, the last of that tree.
This is the first of those two vases, an aurora vase, the style I love making most: a teardrop with a ring of vivid pink and red running through it like the northern lights. Its sister is the angular maple vase.
The maple came down on a side street by the St Boniface golf course. The glow marks the neighbourhood. Exact addresses stay private.
