This one began as a pure egg form, and I loved it that way. But I keep arriving at the same conviction: function over pure form. So the egg opened up and became a mini vase for dried flowers. The red inclusions running through the maple remind me of the aurora borealis, and the void the wood left behind is filled with blue resin, night sky behind the lights. It comes from the same St. Boniface haul as the larger maples in this collection.
Part of the door-knock salvage in St. Boniface: a front yard full of bucked maple a few streets south of the golf course, traded for the promise of a bowl carved from the homeowner's own tree. One tree, many pieces; this is the smallest of the family.
