Why this one exists

Tiger cherry, from the Gifted Wood series. The stripes running through the grain are chatoyancy, the wood catching and bending light like a cat's eye, and they are why this cherry earns the name tiger. The form is my study of the balance between square and circle geometry. Its twin in this collection wears the same study with its edges carved differently; I made them as a conversation, not as copies. When I posted the videos online, someone marvelled that I could draw a circle freehand. Everything I do is freehand. The squares are not perfect. The circles are not perfect. The feeling is perfect.
